Apple Crisp

Updated: Mar 5

”Few can resist my apple crisp. The milk baked right into the topping adds a delectable flavor. This is a comfort food they’ll love.”

Any recipe that includes apples is hard for me to resist! This apple crisp recipe will not disappoint all the other apple lovers out there. It’s sweet, it’s tangy, its creamy; it hits all the spots for guaranteed taste bud satisfaction!

Recipe Ingredients:

Makes 6 servings

Recipe found in Millie Snyder's Lean & Luscious 3rd Edition Cookbook, P 260

Apples:

  • 6 small, sweet apples, peeled, cored,

and very thinly sliced

  • 1 cup water

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch, dissolved in 1 tablespoon of water

Topping:

  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk

  • 1 cup grapenuts cereal (4 ½ ounces)

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Dash ground nutmeg

  • 3 tablespoons reduced-calorie margarine

  • 2 tablespoons water

Cooking Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a 9-inch pie pan with nonstick cooking spray.

Place apples in a large sauce pan.

Add water, sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, sugar, and nutmeg. Toss to combine.

Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Add cornstarch mixture.

Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture has thickened and apples are slightly tender, about 5 minutes.

Spoon apples into prepared pan.

In a medium bowl, combine all topping ingredients, except water.

Mix with a fork until milk and margarine are evenly distributed. Add water and mix well. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.

Bake, uncovered, 20 minutes, or lightly browned. For best flavor, serve warm.

We enjoyed this apple crisp with some low fat vanilla frozen yogurt and it did not disappoint!

PRO TIP: Invest in a Mandolin slicer! They make food prep 110% faster! The one we used in this recipe can be found on Amazon here. Below are some examples of using this mandolin slicer. It is by far our favorite out there!
